Women in Sports Journalism

In this class, we heard from Jarah Wright about her journey into Sports Journalism as a woman. Her journey was rough and honestly, I was sad to hear her current salary in conjunction with what she has to put u with on a daily basis and hearing about her workload.
It really makes you think. Especially since you only see people who are already very successful in the industry. Not to mention, we only see the facade, we only see what they want us to see. It makes me wonder what besides the nude photos that resulted from a massive breach in Erin Andrew's privacy she had to endure to get where she is. And she took over Pam Oliver's position as Pam Oliver had gotten too old. So her journey was not enough to see her at the top, her age disqualified her from continuing to reap the rewards of her hard work and the sacrifices she probably made over the years. Do we see men endure this as they age? No, not usually. In fact, we often see them make the decision to move on and choose who will take on the reins!
I have heard and seen that being a woman in the media is hard. But how much harder it must be to be reporting on a "mens" sport. The amount of undermining and sexism that comes to play in that situation is unfortunate and a mountain not many women have been able to climb and conquer. Its a shame that these women are automatically counted as ditzy and unaware of what they are talking about just because they are a female. None of these commentators know how these women grew up or how they got where they are.
This needs to change and it can, but the men and women of the world have to stop making it about gender and make it about knowledge.
